Summary of Human Development

As resources provided by the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UoIT) were examined it became evident that teaching is different from how it was in prior years. The teacher can no longer be focused on just providing information to the students, and not expanding on it. This former style of teaching, known as the “black box”, was too strict on how teachers were expecting students to succeed in school. It’s main focus was based around having the teachers only distributing facts and information to the students, with the expectation that only the “knowledgeable and competent” would pass (Black and Wiliam, 1998). The “black box” method of teaching had been abandoned because it was no longer a valid means of educating the students. A new system was required to provide students with the knowledge and skills needed to pass school and become contributing members of society.

 

With this change in teaching the concept of understanding the mind has become a more important component for education. Scientific work had undergone the process of researching the brain and mind in order to learn more about people’s ability to think and learn, while looking at their “development of competence” (National Research Council, 2000). This led to the realization that teaching students had to be done in a way that explored their ability to learn and think. This, in turn, meant opportunities in which students could be motivated and engaged in their learning experience.

 

Through reading these sources it became noticeable how there was also the need to address levels of mental stress that students may experience. In the past students were only taught “facts” and felt that only grades and the “right answer” would guarantee success. The problem behind this thinking was that students dedicated time and energy towards finding the “right answer” (Black and Wiliam, 1998). This discouraged students and gave them a fear of providing only the “wrong results”, which resulted in them seeing their inability to learn as a “defect in themselves” (Black and Wiliam, 1998). In fact, Sir Ken Robinson argues that this obsession with the “right answer” is the same as anaesthetising students to make them learn (Robinson). This resulted in students suffering from mental stress, which did not help them prepare for a post-educational environment. Students cannot learn in an environment that reinforces mental stress, but rather need to be taught in a way that allows them participate in school without personal fears.

 

The goal of this section is to provide ideas of challenging the students to what they have learned through critical thinking, while providing them the chance to exercise what they have learned through activities provided in this guide.  

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Teaching Strategies

Lecture Strategies: This method of teaching will only be used to introduce participants to the topic in question. It will be used to convey information to the participants and explain what they can expect to learn and work on. As a result, this teaching should only be used at the beginning and end of the session. This will allow more time dedicated for the participants to teach, and therefore develop, themselves about human development.

 

Problem-Based Learning: Participants will be presented with activities in which they will only rely on the knowledge from previous lessons before being taught new material. It motivates the students to research and teach themselves how to complete an activity. This fits for the theme of human development because it trains them to think about what they need to do to complete an assignment.

 

Cooperative Learning: This form of learning focuses on the participants working together to achieve the same goal. In regards to “human development” they can come up with different ideas towards how education can be taught through the digital tools provided to them. At the same time they can also come up with ideas about human development, such as creating strategies to reduce mental stress.

 

Learning-Centered Teaching: The participants are responsible for teaching themselves, while the instructor is only responsible for guiding the former through the activities. This means that the participants have more responsibility towards educating themselves and completing the activities. This can be useful in teaching them about responsibility, which can be seen as one major component for human development.

 

Discussion Strategies: Through conversation participants can give each other ideas while listening to the opinions of others. This makes a positive environment because participants will feel encouraged to take part in the activities. It is also a good opportunity to work communication into human development, as it allows the participants to learn how to interact with members of society.

 

Team-Based Learning: As mentioned in the previous learning methods, the participants will working together in groups for different activities. Through those other methods the participants will be able to create a positive environment for themselves, as they will be working together throughout the activities. This is an important teaching method for human development because the instructor is not the only source a participant needs to learn from.

Human Development

"Storify" is a social network service tool that allows users to create “stories”. Users can also utilize social media, such as twitter and facebook, to allow their story to spread to different audiences (Storify, 2015). This is a useful tool for someone to discuss about a developing event, which includes explaining what it is about and expressing their opinions on it.

 

"Storify" is a useful tool to discuss about human development, since the concept itself refers to how people were taught in the past and what the current education system has developed into. It is also an effective way of introducing the multiple levels of development.
