Summary of Physical Development

Through examining the readings on “physical development" it became noticeable how there was an established relationship between physical health and academic achievement. The education system now focuses on suiting the needs of the students and analyzing their physical health. Physical health is now seen by the education system as an important component of ensuring students can achieve academically. This is due to a growing concern of how malnutrition affects the students’ ability to perform academically, as noted by the article “The Link Between Nutrition and Cognitive Development”:

“Recent research provides compelling evidence that undernutrition – even in its “milder” forms – during any period of childhood can have detrimental effects on the cognitive development of children and their later productivity as adults… undernutrition impacts the behavior of children, their school performance, and their overall cognitive development” (Tufts University, 1998).

As researchers analyzed this revelation, it has become more important that physical health in students must be addressed. This means providing strategies for physical activities to help not only improve students’ health, but their ability to perform in school.

International research also found that a good physical health, usually through physical activity such as sports, has been a “positive predictor of academic achievement” (Department of Sport and Recreation). This positive link between physical development and academic performance is an excellent combination when taking into account that students can spend more time with physical activities without it affecting their grades (Department of Sport and Recreation). Physical development is also useful for building a student’s self-esteem and confidence. Research on organizations, such as sports communities, have helped students who are physically active to being “more likely to perform better academically” (Department of Sport and Recreation). This research shows that being healthy is important for both their body and academic success. It is now more important for the education system to produce and execute strategies that help the physical development of students.

For this section I shall focus on introducing tools to create methods for physical development, such as exercise guides. At the same time, students will learn about healthy foods that they can consume to help improve their academic performance.

Teaching Strategies

Lecture Strategies: This method of teaching will only be used to introduce participants about the basics of physical development and health. This strategy should not be the main focus of teaching physical development. The reason for this is that the participants will learn for themselves about how physical development can improve younger individuals for education.

Problem-Based Learning: Participants will be presented will activities about health and physical development. They will be introduced to activities that allows them to utilize their knowledge about physical development. At the same time it allows students to research what can be done to improve physical health.

Cooperative Learning: This form of learning focuses on the participants working together to achieve the same goal. In regards to “physical development” they can come up with different activities, or exercises, that engages the students physically. At the same time they can work together on developing plans to improve health through exercise.

Learning-Centered Teaching: The participants are responsible for teaching themselves, while the instructor is only responsible for guiding the former through the activities. This means that the participants have more responsibility towards educating themselves and completing the activities. Through this method the participants will be learning first-hand how physical development should be taught.

Mobile Learning: This is method of teaching focuses on participants learning while not being restricted to one location. Through this strategy the participants can engage in activities and exercises while remaining in one location for extended periods of time. A preferred strategy for physical development as it allows participants to move around.

Team-Based Learning: As mentioned in the previous learning methods, the participants will working together in groups for different activities. This a good learning strategy for participating in physical activities and sports.

Physical Development

"Symbaloo" is a “personal startpage that allows you to easily navigate the web and compile your favorite sites all into one visual interface” (Symbaloo, 2007). This digital tool combines visual imagery to websites that have been added to one’s bookmark.

This is a useful tool for physical development, since it refers the concepts of exercise and nutrition. "Symbaloo" can be used to create a visual guide for learners to utilize. With it they can gather websites that learners may find the most beneficial while incorporating visual imagery to represent them.
