Personality Development

Summary of Personality Development

Personality is the concept that refers to “the combination of characteristics or qualities that form an individual’s distinctive character” (Oxford Dictionaries, 2015).  This is the general understanding towards identifying personality. After analyzing the different sources on “personality”, especially one that talks about Erik Erikson’s psychosocial stages, it is clear that this form of development is complex. This following summary will reveal what I understood about “personality”.

It was clear that there are multiple factors that go into the development of an individual’s distinct personality. This includes referring to the concept of “nature vs. nurture”, where both sides contribute to the development of an individual’s personality. These components illustrate how the development of “personality” is complex and that a flaw in any of these areas will have negative repercussions for the individual (Laffer, 2015).

While examining these components it became clear that “parenting style” is one of the most important for “personality”. There are four particular forms of “parenting style” which are: “authoritarian” (which is a very strict form of parenting), “permissive” (which does not involve any system of rules), “uninvolved” (in which the parent has nothing to do with the child’s welfare) and “authoritative” (a system that has guidelines, but is also supportive, making it the most healthy form of parenting) (Laffer, 2015). This important to consider because a parent has the influence over their child’s development.

Another point that needs to be discussed is how people attain certain life skills that build on their personality. This is evident in the psychosocial stages mentioned discussed by Erik Erikson. He argued that “culture and society and the conflicts that take place” influence the “personality” of an individual, while giving them the necessary life skills such as “trust” and “identity” (McLeod, 2008).

These were the major points that I discovered while learning more about “personality”. It is important that children develop strong personalities so they can attain the life skills needed to become active members of society.

Cooperative Learning: This form of learning encourages the use of teamwork in order to accomplish a particular goal. This type of learning can also provide skills that certain participants may lack. This includes attaining personality-based skills such as “trust”, since they will make these individuals feel more confident about themselves while being engaged with the activity.

Problem-Based Learning: Problem-based learning, much like co-operative learning, allows the opportunity for participants to achieve personality-based skills that they otherwise would not have achieved. In this form of learning the participants are required to find a solution to a problem, which is given without any prior instructions. This form of learning can encourage “initiative” among the participants, as it teaches them how to think for themselves.

Self-Regulated Learning: This form of learning requires the participant to control how they are to understand the subject material, as well as complete the assignment. Self-regulated learning is beneficial as it allows the participant to question themselves about what is required of them to complete the assignment. It is through this form of learning that the participant can gains both an understanding of the course material, as well as developing “personality-based” skills. This includes initiative, where they are more willing to engage in the material, and competence.

“My Personality Test” is a free online test that is designed to help participants learn more about their ‘personality’. This includes identifying their strengths and weaknesses. At the same time it shows users how they may find fulfillment in both their “professional and romantic life” (My Personality).

The online test is a useful tool to help participants learn more about their colleagues and themselves. This is especially beneficial for teachers, as it allows them to learn more about their students. It can be used to learn what their strengths are, as well as what they will need to improve upon. Through learning from the results gathered from this type of test, teachers will be able to better adapt their teaching methods in order to help students achieve the best learning experience possible.

The test is also useful for understanding who would be able to achieve life-based skills. This includes determining who is able to interact with others, as well as learning about those who may require extra support to achieve the necessary social skills. While the test may not be a full representation of each participant’s personality, it does allow insight for others to learn from.
